A tablet-type personal computer is essentially a small laptop. It has all the important functional characteristics of a full-size laptop and some that are unique. The tablet is equipped with a rotating touch screen, has an additional input device, and runs a standard PC operating system such as Linux or Windows. Today, the term tablet is also used to refer to computer-type devices that work primarily with a touch screen, but are not designed to run normal PC operating systems or applications.
The evolution of the computerized tablet device has been rapid in the last ten years. In 2001, Microsoft's Bill Gates demonstrated the first prototype Tablet PC in public and it was released nationally in 2002 as the Microsoft Tablet PC. The innovations of many companies followed quickly. In 2003, Fingerworks touch technology and touch gestures were finally used on Apple's iPhone. In 2005, Nokia launched the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. Samsung launched its offering in 2006. 2007 was a great year for new developments: a tablet based on Mac and Mac OS X hardware is launched at Macworld by Axiotron called the Modbook; Apple Launches the iPod touch, an MP3 Player with WiFi; and Amazon releases the Amazon Kindle.
The tablet concept actually started many years before. In his article 'A Personal Computer for Children of All Ages', Alan Kay was the first person to conceptualize the concept of a desktop computer. He called it Dynabook. It was in the late 1960s, early 1970s and the Dynabook was going to be a tablet type computer for the purpose of learning and gathering information. Kay hypothesized that these oversized computers could connect wirelessly to centralized storage. The Dynabook was the size of a notepad, with a screen on top and a hardware keyboard on the bottom. It was envisioned that it would also play audio files, record voice, and more.
Communication Intelligence Corporation created the Handwriter recognition system in the 1980s. This was one of the first pen-based computer systems based on handwriting recognition. It was thought that it could eventually replace conventional computers that had keyboards. In September 1989, the first commercially available tablet-type laptop was GriDPad from GRiD Systems. His operating system was based on MS-DOS. In 1991, Microsoft announced Pen Extensions for Windows 3.1 and called them Windows for Pen Computing. A year later, GO Corporation released PenPoint, Lexicus released a handwriting recognition system, and Microsoft released Windows for Pen Computing. Between 1992 and 1994, EO, NCR, Samsung, Dauphin, Fujitsu, TelePad, Compaq, Toshiba, and IBM released hardware to run Windows for Pen Computing or PenPoint.
Eventually, all the progressions lead to the advancement of a wide selection in tablet technology that we can enjoy today. In 2010, Apple introduced the iPad, Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab, with Google Android, and Dell announced the Inspiron Duo A Flip-Screen Tablet / Netbook Hybrid. HP released the Slate 500, which is capable of running a full version of Windows. 7. Already this year, RIM released the BlackBerry Playbook that runs the BlackBerry Tablet OS. Dell showcased the Streak 7 tablet and announces that they are working on the 10-inch Streak 10. Additionally, Apple released the iPad 2, Toshiba released the Toshiba tablet, a 10-inch tablet, and Samsung released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, the slimmest tablets. In the near future, perhaps this Christmas, larger and smaller tablets, as well as faster, thinner and higher resolution tablets are expected to be introduced to consumers.
